Bus segment

A bus segment is the physical connection between the Busmaster and a fieldbus system (eBus / Modbus) or to an OPC server. As a rule, this is either a serial interface (COM 1, COM 2, …) or a TCP address. In Busmaster Web, bus segments are logically assigned to a location. Expert mode is also available in the bus segment and allows, among other things, firmware updates for eBus devices. To access a bus participant, select the relevant bus segment in the Busmaster’s location view.

Create an eBus bus segment

Please select a location. The button can be used to create a bus segment. Select the eBus type that suits your scenario:

KBR-TCP (multisys)

Used with all KBR TCP devices (multisys, multimess, etc.). Required parameters: IP address and port. The “Search by Address” function can be used to search the local network for IP addresses of devices from this manufacturer.

eBus COM server

Used with COM servers such as Wiesemann+Theis. Required parameters: IP address and port. The “Search by Address” function can be used to search the local network for IP addresses of devices from this manufacturer.

eBus serial interface

Used when accessing local serial interfaces on the system.

eBus segment properties

Name/Designation/Title

A meaningful text entry. The designation is used for identification and search purposes and can be changed at any time.

eBus ping timeout

Number – Time in ms. This parameter is only effective during the bus participant search.

eBus timeout

Number – Time in ms for eBus communication. A complete response is expected within this time. If a complete response is not received, communication is repeated up to the maximum number of attempts. As an alternative to a fixed timeout value, the automatic timeout function can also be used. The system automatically determines an optimal value by taking the longest processing time of a successfully processed telegram and doubling it.

Retry attempts

Number – The number of attempts made following a failed communication attempt before a fault is assumed.

Telegram interval

Number – Time in ms between two requests to the same device.

Response time

Number – Time in ms. The response time refers to the delay before the device sends a reply. If modern communication components are used, this time can be set to 0 ms. This means that the participant can reply straight away. For older or simpler serial-to-TCP converters, a time must be entered here for switching from transmission to reception.

IP address

Text – An IP address or a DNS name via which the TCP device can be reached.

TCP port

Number – Port number (see typical port numbers).

TCP timeout

Number – Time in ms. There are three timeout periods for communication with the TCP interface. A connection must be established within the connection timeout period. The ping timeout is used to check segment reachability, while the write timeout is intended for telegram communication.

Modbus TCP

Used with Modbus TCP devices. Required parameters: IP address and port.

Modbus RTU/ASCII via Ethernet

Used with Modbus RTU devices that are connected via a COM server. Required parameters: IP address and port.

Modbus RTU/ASCII serial

OPC-DA

Used when connecting to an OPC DA server.

OPC-UA

Used when connecting to an OPC UA server.

OPC segment properties

IP address

Text – An IP address or a DNS name via which the TCP device can be reached.

ProgID (DA only)

Text – Specifies the unique program ID of the OPC server.

Time zone

Measurement and energy data are processed and stored internally in universal UTC time. In evaluations, these are then displayed in the appropriate local time, depending on whether they are associated with a location or a project.

Charts may contain channels with different time zones. A time zone is therefore specified in the chart properties.
